Spring 2012 Psychology Department Student Awards

 Deadline: Application materials are due to Dr. Foo by March 30, 2012.

The Psychology Department will present the following awards to 3 graduating seniors-

  • William James Award- for outstanding breadth & depth of academic achievement
  • Edward C. Tolman Award- for outstanding achievement in research
  • G. Stanley Hall Award- for leadership and service to the UNC Asheville Psychology Department

To apply, please submit the following (while you may apply for any, or all, of these awards, each student may only win one award)-

  1. A brief letter stating which award you are seeking with an endorsement at the bottom from a psychology faculty member (the endorsement should be just one sentence “I endorse this application” signed by a psychology faculty member).
  2. UNC Asheville transcript (can be unofficial).
  3. A 1-2 page personal statement introducing yourself and summarizing the achievements which provide a basis for the award.

Seitz Scholarship

Deadline: Application materials are due to Dr. Laughon by March 30, 2012.

This scholarship is made possible by the generosity of UNC Asheville Psychology Department graduates and faculty members, on behalf of Dr. Theodore (Ted) Seitz, professor emeritus and long-term chair of the department. The endowment allows the Psychology Department to award $350 to TWO undergraduate psychology majors.

To qualify for the scholarship an applicant must:

  1. be a rising junior or senior;
  2. be a declared psychology major;
  3. have completed at least 12 semester hours of UNC Asheville psychology courses;
  4. have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; and
  5. have earned at least 9 credit hours per semester for each of the past two semesters.

General criterion: A student who demonstrates the potential to make a contribution in psychology, as indicated by GPA and accomplishments in scholarship and service.

A scholarship selection committee chosen by the Chair of the Psychology Department will review the applications.  Applicants will be notified of the committee's decision by the end of the semester.

Tutoring

Tutoring for all courses, including research methods and statistics, is often handled on an informal basis. If you are interesting in getting or giving tutoring, we recommend you begin by contacting the professor who teaches the course or topics of interest.
